Danakil Depression 3 Days Tour
Experience one of the most otherworldly landscapes on Earth with active volcanoes, salt lakes, and colorful hydrothermal fields.
The Danakil Depression ranks as one of Ethiopia’s most alluring and physically challenging natural attractions. This geological wonder sits 125 meters below sea level, making it one of the lowest and hottest places on Earth.
Erta Ale is a shield volcano with a 30km base diameter and 1km square caldera at its summit. At 613 meters high, it contains the world’s longest existing lava lake, present since the early twentieth century. This is one of only five permanent lava lakes in the world.
The Depression’s landscape was formed by the separation of three tectonic plates, creating a unique environment of salt flats, sulfur springs, and active volcanic activity. The colorful hydrothermal fields of Dallol create an alien-like landscape with yellow, green, and orange mineral formations.
Local Afar people have adapted to this harsh environment, mining salt using traditional methods unchanged for centuries. Camel caravans still transport salt across the desert, creating a timeless scene of human adaptation to extreme conditions.
